The research is devoted to the comparative analysis of the A. Gide’s novel «Isabelle» and the A. Chekhov’s play «The Cherry Orchard». The intertextual connection of these works is indicated by numerous markers: the central position of the “garden” topos, the images of the main female characters, the motive of the game, the similarity of sound images, the nostalgic tonality in conjunction with modernist irony.
The purpose of the article is to study the similarities and differences in the artistic interpretation of the main motifs and images in these works. The authors’ belonging to the same historical and cultural period and literary direction (modernism) determines the actualization of similar segments of the semantic field of the “garden” topos. At the same time, there are a number of differences in the works in the interpretation of this central image, associated with its substantial content of national-historical specificity. The principal difference is in the philosophical interpretation of the image of the garden in the context of the author’s worldview and cultural traditions of French and Russian literatures.
