GENDER PSYCHOLOGY IN BORYS GRINCHENKO’S SHORT PROSE (BASED ON MATERIAL OF “NELIUB” (“DISLIKE”)

Abstract

The article analyses the chracters’ gender psychology in Borys Grinchenko’s short prose based on previously unstudied novel “Neliub”(“Dislike”), the last issue of which was published about 100 years ago. The gender approach is used to supplement the traditional interpretation of the work by disclosing other levels of its meaning. The choice for the analysis of the “Neliub” story is determined by the need to return this story to the educational (as well as readers’) environment, as unfairly forgotten work of high artistic value. It is established that in the short story «Neliub» by Borys Grinchenko the importance of performing the most important roles of the defender and guardian in the family is expressed, understanding of the complexity
of the process of development of these images-archetypes as well as awareness of the married couple as Husband and Wife in the described social conditions. The hypothesis about the partly autobiographical character of the work, expressed in terms of ideological and artistic, is expressed, since the narrative chronologically accurately depicts the marital crisis of three years and indicates the ways of its solution. The latter is indirectly confirmed by the date of writing (1887) and by the fact that in all editions «Neliub» was introduced by both Grinchenkos almost unchanged (except, of course, spelling).
