Abstract

Two autobiographies of Leonid Chernov-Maloshyichenko considered by the author as the memoirs of subjective type are analyzed in the article. The first autobiography of partially forgotten writer is short and resembles like the traditional literary works, and the second is extended and written emotionally, in the spirit of expressionism, with a distinct romantic pathos and pathetic individual places. In the latter we
can observe a noticeable worldview and creative transgression of the writer who saw himself in the literature first as a Russian-speaking writer and then gradually moved to the Ukrainian language and became a prominent figure in the national literary process at the turn of 20-30s of the 20th century. The memoirs have been written in 1930, however the apologetics of building of a new society is almost absent there,
unlike the memoirs of a number of the Ukrainian writers of that period (V.  Polishchuk, V. Sosiura). But the final words of L. Chernov’s autobiography show that he was underestimating complicated social and political reality of the beginning of 1930s when ideological pressure on the literature had been intensified.
It seems that the writer lived in some parallel imaginary world, and as a result some pathetic confidence had appeared in his words, obviously out of keeping with the reality of that time.
