Abstract

In this article the origin and development of the phenomenon of alternative history in fiction are traced. Alternative History originated in Ancient Greece and Rome. In his treatise the historian Titus Livius advanced a hypothesis that Alexander the Great did not die at 33 years of age and devoted several pages to march on Rome of The Great Conqueror in 323 BC. During the 20th century the most common alternate history
themes of the works of foreign writers were events related to the Napoleonic wars and World War II, the American war for Independence and a civil war. The highest interest of writers to the fiction alternative happens around the end of the 20th — the beginning of the 21st century. In world literature it is now possible to trace a tendency to increase demand for alternative history literature, which in its turn ousts fiction
from readers’ bookshelves and equals the documentary literature.
